Outraged Star Wars fans are lining up a protest against the Weinstein Company, which they say recut and ruined the film Fanboys.

Originally about a boy with cancer who treks to Skywalker Ranch, the edited version of Fanboys (which played to approving audiences at the 2007 Star Wars Celebrations in Los Angeles and London) allegedly sanitizes the terminal illness right out of the plot, thus giving the film a more mocking attitude toward the fans.

In protest, the Save Fanboys site urges Star Wars aficionados to picket The Superhero Movie, a spoof flick that Weinstein is releasing March 28.

Though one can almost feel the outraged spittle flying from the computer screen, give the organizers some credit for having a tiny sense of humor:

RELEASE THE ORIGINAL CUT OF FANBOYS OR MILLIONS OF STAR WARS FANS WILL BOYCOTT EVERY SINGLE WEINSTEIN COMPANY FILM! (Except for maybe Kevin Smith’s movies, because we really like those. But all of your other movies? BOYCOTT! Lifetime BOYCOTT, Darth Weinstein!!!)

this is a shame, since the one saving grace of the movie was that it had some heart at the core of its plot. I have not seen it, but friends have. I’ve heard interviews with the director, he seems a really nice guy. But at its’ best this is frankly a not-very-good-comedy that tries to emulate not-very-good-comedies like Kevin Smith fare. No cut of it is much better than just another broad indie where kids yell and swing from ropes in place of any thoughtful comedy.

It’s tested poorly so they’re messing with it, of course. Not that I expect it would test any better whatsoever.
