This may be the last thing you expected to see a day before Jobs is (hopefully) destined to reveal what can be done with the iPhone SDK, but nevertheless here it is. Donald Hays has posted a link to “Sunset,” which is a game he wrote for the iPhone. I was skeptical when he described it as “a 3D RPG,” because this is the iPhone we’re talking about — the thing can’t even run Flash — but lo and behold, that’s exactly what it is. The graphics are homemade (he says he been working on the game since August of ‘07), and the genre conventions are many (it’s an RPG in the old Dungeons of Daggorath style), so you run around, kill stuff, complete objectives, and level up), but in this case it’s not the game that’s so amazing, but where and how you’re playing it.

Wired’s Gadget Lab blog has posted a mockup of the rumored MacBook Air. They based their mockups on what inside sources had to tell them. The big points are that this thing is supposedly very, very thin and lack and optical drive and Ethernet port. I can see omitting networking ports and an optical drive if there is a docking station involved, but I would be hard pressed to buy any computer that didn’t have a dedicated networking port.

[Editor's Note: The video has been removed from YouTube but a 'permanent' copy of it is available on Defamer here]

In lieu of Golden Globes awards speeches, Defamer.com’s East Coasted sibling site posted a memorable video package, via Hollywood Interrupted, fêting messianic Scientology mouthpiece Tom Cruise as he accepted their 2005 Freedom Medal of Valor. Like most of Scientology’s sacred babblings, the text was never meant to reach outside eyes; the video quickly disappeared from YouTube, soon to shake off from the temporary effects of the tranquilizing serum plunged into its neck and find itself buried alive beneath a patch of carefully attended petunias on the grounds of Gilman Hot Springs HQ.

(Source: bigdumbobject.co.uk)          George Lucas sums up his “intent” for one of the most universally hated characters of all time.

“One of the key characters that helped us realize what was going on was Jar Jar Binks, because the kids that are under 10 years old, he’s one of their favorite characters. For people over 40, they cannot stand him—it’s a hate thing. You know, they’ve always been for 12-year-olds, and that’s never changed. People don’t want to think of it that way. They want to think those films are for grown-ups. Even though they were 10 years old when they saw it, it’s still very important to them, so, for them, it’s a grown-up movie, as opposed to a kids’ movie.”

Vicon Ent.’s Los Angeles-based House of Moves has launched a new state-of-the art motion-capture studio at the University of Central Florida on the grounds of the Florida Interactive Entertainment Academy, UCF’s graduate video-game development school. The 3,500-square-foot studio, one of the largest on the East Coast, is described by House of Moves executives as a “world-class facility” for industry professionals and academia.

UCF and city leaders say the 46-camera studio is a major pillar for the area’s multimedia future. In addition to providing hands-on educational opportunities for students, it serves as a catalyst for a downtown “Creative Village,” where high-paying jobs mix with professional, residential and retail development.

(Soucre: Defamer.com) At long last, Cloverfield, Slusho Beverage Corp.’s bold foray into the sci-fi disaster genre, had its first screenings last night. Hours later, members of the fanboy journalist elite lucky enough to have had first, unfettered access to the mysterious creature at the center of all the monument-decapitating mayhem, took to the internets. Below, a round-up of the buzz. [Ed. note: We'll try to avoid spoilers, but promise nothing. You've been warned.]
· If we are to believe the Kingdom of the Fanboys’ semi-merciful Lord and Ruler Harry Knowles, it was a watershed moment in giant-fucking- monster-stomping- through-Manhattan cinematic history: “The movie is fucking brilliant. It’s what we were told it was going to be. An intimate perspective on an impossibly grand scale human disaster beyond most human levels of comprehension.” Slashfilm reminds us, however, that this was a guy who thought the Godzilla remake was peaches. (Source: The Muskegon Chronicle)        Winsor McCay, the Spring Lake native who is considered the father of American film animation, may be coming to a theater near you.

Special to The ChronicleAnimator Winsor McCay interacted with an on-screen dinosaur, Gertie, projected behind him on the stage. McCay and Gertie inspired an entire generation of animators. Not until the collaborative projects of Disney Studios in the 1930s was McCay’s artistry rivaled in such films as Snow White. (Click to enlarge.) Members of a committee considering ways to honor McCay and his work are trying to tie the animator in with Spring Lake Village’s Heritage Festival and possibly the Muskegon Film Festival. If the group is successful, both events could show some of McCay’s most famous animated films.

(Source: cinematical.com) So you might be wondering why I chose not to include the actual photos from the set of Terry Gilliam’s latest, The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus. Well trust me, it’s in your own best interest if you are not a fan of spoilers. Just Jared has a few on-set photos of star Heath Ledger and they are pretty creepy, not to mention “spoilerific.” So if you like to keep things a surprise, you probably won’t want to peek at those ones. The film is a passion project for Gilliam and is his first original screenplay in a long time. The story (or what we know so far) centers on the magical Dr. Parnassus and jumps between parellel stories of a modern day London and a far more mystical version of that very same place.

TV personality and actress Maila Nurmi, better known to horror buffs as Ed Wood’s Vampira, has passed away at aged 86, according to ShockTillYouDrop. With her coal-black hair and ghostly pale skin, Vampira became a cult sensation in the 1950s as she introduced films on The Vampira Show and interviewed guests. As a sort of pioneer of horror-comedy, Nurmi would encourage those she interviewed to talk to her pet spider or have them sign an epitaph instead of an autograph, things like that. Nurmi’s persona of Vampira would reach its apex when Ed Wood cast her to essentially play the same character — “vampire girl” — in his infamous flop Plan 9 from Outer Space. The persona she created would also be made fresh for a new generation when Lisa Marie put her stamp on the character in Tim Burton’s 1994 semi-classic Ed Wood. Best line: “I’ve got real offers from real studios, buddy — I don’t need to b**w some dentist for a part.”

(Source: MTV.com)       MTV chatted with Elijah Wood today about the Peter Jackson-produced The Hobbit and its sequel. Here’s a clip:

“I haven’t spoken to [Jackson] directly about it [but] I’ve e-mailed him, and as far as I know, the two films that they’re doing, one will be ‘The Hobbit’ and another will take place between the 60 years that happened between ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings,’” the once and future Frodo enthused to MTV News, possibly confirming rumors that the second planned film would not be a Part II, but instead a narrative bridge.
