Director James Cameron and singer Olivia Newton-John were evacuated from their homes after a fire tore through their neighbourhood, part of a blaze that has ripped across California in recent days.

The fire – believed to have been caused by arcing power lines, and fuelled by the dry weather in California – started at around 5am on Sunday morning, and rapidly swept through 35,000 acres along the coast from San Diego to Santa Barbara, killing one person and injuring thousands.

20th Century Fox issued an urgent SOS to the major agencies looking for a quick rewrite person on the X-Men Origins: Wolverine project starring Hugh Jackman.

“It’s pencil down until midnight on Halloween,” says Oscar-winning writer-producer Akiva Goldsman. That’s his current schedule as he tries to finish up his latest draft of Angels and Demons, the sequel to The Da Vinci Code, before the Writers Guild contract expires Oct. 31. “It’s unavoidably intensely stressful, but it’s the way of the world right now.”

“It’s official. Apple is the most valuable computer maker in the world,” Saul Hansell reports for The New York Times.”In the wake of the company’s better than expected earnings in the quarter ended September 30th, Apple’s shares rose by nearly 7 percent, making the company’s total market value $162 billion,” Hansell reports. “That edges out IBM, worth $155 billion, and Intel, worth $156 billion. Apple also surged past Nokia, the most valuable cellphone maker, which is worth $150 billion.”

Hansell reports, “Indeed, Apple is now the fourth most valuable technology company, after Cisco ($189 billion), Google ($208 billion), and Microsoft ($290 billion).”

Paul W.S. Anderson, who will be producing the film adaptation of the popular video-game series Castlevania, told SCI FI Wire that he’s working hard to get the film into production before the anticipated writer’s strike.

“[I'm] hoping to get a script for it in two or three weeks,” Anderson said on the Montreal set of his current film, Death Race, last week. “And I’m hoping it’s great. Sylvain White is directing it, and we’re hoping to kind of make it a pre-strike movie. So it kind of shoots in the next couple months.”
