Remember the days when getting a ringtone up on the iPhone was about as hard as, say, fixing the economy? There were all kinds of programs you had to mess around with, and sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn’t, and most of the time, it just wasn’t worth the trouble. Cut ahead a year from those days of yore to right now, and look at this — all you need to get a ringtone of almost any song you want is iTunes itself.

A developer on Tuesday released a patch enabling Apple TV to play practically any DRM-free multimedia file with the insertion of a thumb drive into the box.

Normally, Apple TV can only play video and music files that are compatible with iTunes or bought through the iTunes Store, but coder Scott Davilla’s patch essentially “Jailbreaks” the TV set-top box from such restrictions by installing an open-source media center called Boxee.

A California federal judge ordered TorrentSpy to pay nearly $111 million in damages for infringing the copyright of thousands of films and TV shows through its BitTorrent search engine.

U.S. District Judge Florence-Marie Cooper issued a permanent injunction against TorrentSpy, ordering the site to pay $30,000 per copyright infringement–for 3,699 films and shows (all in all about $110,970,000).

“The demise of TorrentSpy is a clear victory for the studios and demonstrates that such pirate sites will not be allowed to continue to operate without facing relentless litigation by copyright holders,” MPAA CEO Dan Glickman said in a statement.

(Source: TUAW) Aaron Besson of MyTriniPhone posted this morning about a new iPhone video recorder. Unlike previous entries into this realm, this updated version from DreamCatcher records both sound and video.I download a copy and gave it a try. The interface is a little on the prototype side but it recorded without a hitch. I was able to copy the resulting mp4 video onto my Mac and play it back. It was grainy (as expected, given the low quality of the iPhone camera) but the audio was clear. Playback on the iPhone itself simply did not work for me.

Apparently this code is based on ffmpeg and there’s a lively little discussion about this over at the Hackint0sh forums, if you care to check that out. You must pay to register if you’d like to record more than 30 seconds at a time or if you simply like the program and want to support the developer. Deets are in the program. Just tap Settings > About > Buynow.

ZiPhone, the free jailbreaking and unlocking tool for iPhone, has hit version 3.0. According to the ZiPhone blog, new features include:

  • NVRAM fix is no longer needed
  • Greyed WiFi solution
  • YouTube fix is no longer needed
  • Apps installer is included
  • Customized plug-ins

You can download the updated installer from the ZiPhone blog.

I’ve been looking forward to the iPhone pwnage tool for some time now. When released, pwnage will allow you to load pre-customized iPhone firmware bundles via iTunes. This means that instead of jailbreaking your phone after updates, you can install already-jailbroken systems.

Yesterday, the iPhone dev team announced that the pwnage release has been delayed for at least a week. The team is responding to possible legal issues about the “validity and legality of the contents of the tools”. The team promises they will not release third-party copyright materials.

When released, pwnage should work with 10.4, 10.5 and Windows.

iPhone hacker Niacin has just released his version of iBooter. Running on Mac, Windows and Linux, iBooter offers an interactive diagnostic and customization tool that talks directly with Apple’s iPhone bootloader. With it you can set environmental variables, write a custom picture to the display (faboo if you’re tired of that USB plug and the iTunes logo), run USB commands and diagnose why, for example, your iPhone isn’t booting correctly.Full installation instructions are available at the iBooter website as well as downloads for all three platforms. If you need to send commands directly to the baseband, iBooter is the tool you’ve been looking for.

A lot of iPhone dev types have known about the SBMobileScreenshotr preference for a very long time. What we didn’t know was how to make it do anything. The software programming site RipDev solved the mystery.

After setting the preference in /var/mobile/Library/Preferences/, just restart Springboard and use the following super-secret key combination: Hold down the Home key and toggle the mute switch. Your screen flashes white, a screen shot appears on your camera roll. How did they figure this out? Given the relative unlikelihood of coming across this key combination by chance, I’m guessing they might have had some human direction. Or maybe they’re just really really good at disassembling code.

If you’d rather not edit your property lists directly, add as an Installer repository and install Apple Screenshot Enabler.

Guess what’s come out of the pumpkin patch news service this time? A video that shows hackers using iTunes to restore an already-jailbroken and activated 1.1.4. The iPhone software bundle (the ipsw file) has been pre-hacked and updates through iTunes to a fully hacked system. Like other hack previews, this one is not yet ready for prime-time. The developers put this together as a proof-of-concept, but hey’ll likely be releasing this method when the actual SDK comes out.

Congratulations again to Pumpkin, roxfan, Turbo, wizdaz, bgm, np101137 and the iPhone dev team.

Scientists at the Gyeongsang National University in South Korea have cloned cats that have the ability to glow-in-the dark when exposed to ultraviolet light. By inserting a virus into the skin cells of a mother cat and placing those contaminated cells into the womb, scientists were able to prove that it was possible to clone an animal with a manipulated gene. Apparently, this development could allow for a better understanding of human genetic diseases in the future. But what about the benefits of glowing cats? If you ask me, cats that could truly glow-in-the-dark would make for an unique and styilsh night-light. And, much like the new Litrospheres, they last for about 12 years. The only downside is that the latter requires no power source while cats require a steady diet.
